My reading time has been drastically cutdown since starting back up at work (I know, boo-hoo poor me).

Needless to say, this requires that I be extra-picky about my reading selections, because as much as I’d like to believe that there’s no such thing as a bad book, let’s be real. Life’s too short for crap books.

Who do I rely on for stellar reading recommendations that haven’t let me down? Reese Witherspoon, duh (she has her own Book Club – check it out!)

It’s true, Reese. We do.

To be fair, this also came highly suggested by my mom (who would be uber ticked if I didn’t give her kudos. Thanks, ma!)

Something in the Water is like a combination of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson and Bonfire by Kristen Ritter. It’s suspenseful and immersed in the deepest and darkest parts of the crime world. There’s mystery, betrayal, suspense,  greed, a touch of humor, and my personal favorite – a twist you don’t see coming right at the end.

Erin is a documentary filmmaker living in London with her extremely smart and devastatingly handsome investment banker fiancé, Mark.  Everything is going swimmingly as they plan their wedding and their life together afterward.

Erin is working on a documentary that follows three inmates as they share their stories and what their plans are for after their release. This is gearing up to be a highly praised project and one of Erin’s most successful films.

Though the economic crash has proved fatal for many careers of his friends, Mark’s job has survived for seven years without any hiccups. Mark and Erin are disgustingly lovesick for each other in everyway and couldn’t have a more gag-inducing relationship. After the wedding, they intend to have a long, romantic honeymoon in Bora Bora where they can bask in each other’s attention while enjoying the relaxing island vibes.

But you know what they say about making plans…

With little time before their wedding left, Mark suddenly loses his job. Panicked by this rocky turn of events, Mark and Erin must reorganize their lives to accommodate this unfortunate circumstance. This unforeseen roadblock shows a chink in Mark’s armor – one that Erin didn’t realize was there…

Despite their ill-fortune, the wedding is beautiful. They whisk away to their honeymoon, where every second is just as magical as Erin thought it would be.

But on a solo scuba excursion out in the middle of the Atlantic after a cataclysmic storm, they find something that will change the course of their lives forever, for better or for worse…

From here on out, they’re not sure who to trust, or where to turn. They only have each other…or do they?

Though improbable on so many levels, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced and sucked me right into the drama. Erin, though somewhat  gullible, is funny and quirky which brings a lightness to a heart-thumping thriller.

She finds herself in the middle of a situation that involves government agencies, Russian thugs, and old-school Cockney gangsters. Alone, these bodies of power would be daunting, but together they create a tension that keeps Erin and Mark paranoid throughout the story.

I thought the tie-in of Erin’s profession as a documentarian into the overall storyline was clever too. It added an extra layer to the story that enhances the buildup to the conclusion.

If you’re looking for a an espionage out law/fast-paced drama-thriller, this is a book you’ll want to check out!
