Is there anything as terrible/awesome as salivating over the promise of the next book in a highly amazing, clear-your-entire-schedule-to-devour-it series? The answer is no, no there is not. And the fact the J.K. Rowling is the authoress behind this god given masterpiece is the icing on the cake.
I’ll start out by saying this – I didn’t think Rowling could possibly outdo herself (HP is just incomparable to anything else, lets be really real), but she came daaaaammmmmn close with this book! 600+ pages of pure gold, people! PURE GOLD!
Okay, so if you have not hopped on the Cormoran Strike band wagon, you need to getcha’ self a ticket. Currently, there are four books in the series and I’m already jonesin’ for the fifth one.
The Cuckoo’s Calling, The Silk Worm, and Career of Evil are the predecessors to Lethal White, and it seems appropriate that each book gets better and better, raising the bar for the next to come. Which is somewhat worrisome for the fans that are full-in devoted to Strike and Robin as the protagonists, because they are spectacular. How is it even possible that Rowling could make them any better? Answer: Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Boom.
Anywayzzz, here’s the low down:
Cormoran Strike is an ex-soldier turned undercover detective, after an encounter with an IED blast kills a fellow soldier and leaves Strike with one leg. Prior investigative ventures have put him in the limelight of the public and the cross-hairs of many a foe.
After an especially deadly encounter with a serial killer that leaves Strike bruised and bloodied and Robin with a severely gashed wrist, Strike again finds himself in the unwanted attention of the masses.
Along with the highly inconvenient ogling Strike receives on a regular basis, he also has to come to terms with the reality the Robin is marrying a righteous twat who has never deserved her (a fact of which all true Strike/Robin fans will fret and scream internally over).
But the show must go on for this dynamic, sleuthing duo. So when Billy, a mentally ill young man claiming to have witnessed the strangling of a young girl (or boy?) when he was a child, clambers into Strike’s office, Strike is left feeling unsettled but determined to help.
Strike and Robin, now business partners rather than boss and secretary, find themselves immersed in a word of the disgustingly rich and hoity toity of Parliament, the edgy and dangerous backstreets of London and the beautiful but haunting manor house of a twisted family that appears to contain a secret to unlock it all.
During this puzzling investigation, Strike is thrown into the mix rather than remaining a stealthy observer and collector of facts, which places him in one cumbersome situation after another.
On top of that, his relationship and complex feelings for Robin are more tense than ever—Robin is indispensable to the business, but their personal relationship is much, much trickier than that.
Robin struggles with her own demons; wondering if Strike respects her as a partner, fighting continuously with Mathew about the passion she feels for her job, and constantly battling the panic attacks that arise at the memory of her unsettlingly close brush with death…
So because I couldn’t stop myself from raving about this book at the beginning of my post, I’m just going reiterate: YOU NEED TO READ THIS ENTIRE SERIES. THIS IS NOT A DRILL
